About The Event

THE SCIENCE AND THE PRACTICE OF HAPPINESS:

It is safe to say that happiness is a common goal for all human beings, but very few can say they have arrived at this goal. The benefits of being happy are multifaceted – happy people have been shown to have better health and longevity, better work-life balance, and even create healthier communities. A happy mental state produces neurophysiological changes – which result in better relationships with family, peers and long-term friendships. Happiness enhances creativity and makes one more innovative.

However, like love, happiness is not only hard to find but is also much misunderstood. There are many different mental states that encompass the generic word of ‘happiness’ and therefore, there are multiple ways of arriving at these states. The culture that we live in places undue importance on a very limited definition of happiness which results in positing external sources of pleasure (money, big home, cars, ability to travel and buy goods) as the key to happiness, whereas the other sources of happiness are neglected. This reduces the possibility that we will arrive at this coveted place of mental and physical well-being. Researchers in social sciences as well as neuroscience have studied the brain as extensively as psychologists have studied the mind – and they all agree that ‘happiness is an inside job’!

In this workshop, we take a revolutionary new approach to finding happiness in our lives. We learn how we can change a few key attitudes and a few behaviors in order to find lasting and intrinsic happiness in our lives, and thereby reducing our dependence on external, unpredictable and ephemeral sources.
